America’s best days lie ahead

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

In tennis there are 3 ways to end a point, a winner, a forced error and an unforced error.

Typically, when one tries to hit a winner, it doesn’t happen with the frequency desired so frustration eventually results.

It is when we enjoy the process of hitting the ball and moving our opponents around that we win the most. And it doesn’t matter how we win the points. Whether we hit at our opponents feet or our opponent chased our shot off the court causing them to take a risk and forcing a mistake, or whether our opponent received an easy ball right in the middle of the court in their strike zone and they miss, it doesn’t matter. We won the point. I repeat, we won the point and had a good time.

Each point we win counts the same and each point we win matters. When we are winning, we still must continuously focus on improving to stay ahead of the competition chasing us. When we lose, we learn from increased awareness of the elements comprising the point. We cannot change the past so there is no reason to dwell.

Our best days happen when we focus on getting the next point.
